Guo Zhuyuan lived in Zhongzhen New Village next to The Big Smokestack, so she has strong emotional ties to this place. She mentioned the book "Under theBig Smokestack," which was an oral history of the area comprised of interviews with local residents that also showcased their photographs. Actually, the book accurately recorded the little details of her own childhood growing up in The Big Smokestack. As a child, Guo Zhuyuan saw a group of veterans move into bi-level apartments they constructed themselves within The Big Smokestack. She also recalled with sadness her move away from the village. Although The Big Smokestack remains, it has lost some of the military family village energy that Guo remembers from her youth.
