Tungshi Hakka Village, Neipu Township, Pingtung County
In researching native language pronunciation, Xu Huiwen specifically consulted with local elders. Laotenglin, Laoteng and neuˋteuˇnaˇ are all names for the settlement, which is located in Xinzhi Village in Wanluan Township. In the early days, Wanluan was home to indigenous, Hakka, and Hokkien residents, so the pronunciation of place names would meld and change as the different groups interacted. Xu Huiwen asked other Hakka language researchers and local elders, who said that while the “neu” in neuˋteuˇnaˇ should be pronounced as in the original Hakka, instead it is pronounced “neu 31”, which shows the influence of Taigi and highlights the cultural and linguistic diversity of these intertwined groups.
