Lu pointed out that the majority of Hakka speakers in Taiwan today speak Sixian, which is the most widely understood accent. Spoken in cities and counties throughout Taiwan, it is used primarily in Miaoli, Taoyuan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Hualien, and Taitung. Compared with other Hakka accents, Sixian has six tones, fewer initial consonants, and few modified tones. There are still differences among Sixian speakers in terms of pronunciation and lexicon. For example, the pronunciation of a character or character combination might differ between Norther Sixian speakers from Miaoli and Southern Sixian speakers from Kaohsiung or Pingtung and speakers of Southern Sixian and Northern Sixian sometimes use different words.
