After the story of this place name was initially confirmed by Ms. Li of the Thao Cultural Development Association, Baraubaw further assisted with recording and translation. Thao people refer to Lalu Island at the center of Sun Moon Lake simply as “Lalu”. To the Thao, Baraubaw stated, Lalu is not simply a mountain or an island, but a holy place where Thao ancestral spirits reside and one of the reasons Thao culture has endured. Lalu is sacred and should it ever disappear, the Thao people would eventually experience the same fate.
