Pokpok Community, Ji’an Township, Hualien County
The name Taosaiyan was recorded in the book The Battle of Kaliawan. The author of this field study was bonga putar pacidal himself, who had heard of Taosaiyan as a child. Later, while doing field work in Jiqi, Huanlien, elders told him that Taosaiyan refers to a natural cave in Houhu. People could hide for safety within this secluded cave. However, with the passage of time, members of the community are no longer sure if the cave exists.
The Sakizaya people originally resided in Takubuwan Village. Following the Kaliawan Incident in 1878, the original population numbering in the tens of thousands was reduced to several hundred. Other survivors secreted themselves in Amis villages and did not dare to speak the Sakizaya language. A member of the Sakizaya, bonga putar pacidal had believed himself to be Amis growing up and never learned the Sakizaya language. Only as an adult did he begin slowly learning from elders, using Romanized text to record the language. In 2007, the Sakizaya people finally received official recognition as a distinct ethnic group.
